Changes to Competition Format for the 2011 Season

With Halo: Reach and StarCraft 2 passes set to go on sale on Tuesday, March 1, MLG is pleased to announce the new and improved competition format for the 2011 Season.

Below is a quick rundown of the most important changes. For all the nitty-gritty details, head to thePro Circuit Section

Pool Play

The Top 16 ranked teams in Halo: Reach and the Top 16 ranked players in StarCraft 2 heading into each Live Competition will be divided into four pools of five teams/players each. The fifth team/player in each pool will be derived from the four teams/players that emerge from the Open Bracket undefeated. The Open Bracket format has not changed from the 2010 Season. It is still a double-elimination, best-of-three bracket.

Pool Play will begin on the Friday of each Pro Circuit Live Competition weekend, with the Top 16 teams/players playing every other team/player in their pool in a best-of-five series. After Open Bracket play is complete and the undefeated competitors become the fifth team/player in each pool, they will then run the gauntlet, playing each team/player in the pool based on the current pool standings, beginning with the 4th Place team/player and ending with the 1st Place team/player.

The results of Pool Play will dictate where each team/player is placed in the Championship Bracket.

Pool Play Results

1st Place – Winners Bracket Semi-Finals

2nd Place – Losers Bracket Round 6

3rd Place – Losers Bracket Round 5

4th Place – Losers Bracket Round 4

5th Place – Losers Bracket Round 3

Check out a simulated bracket.

Once Pool Play is complete, the Championship Bracket Format is identical to the 2010 Season. The Bracket will play out until one team/player remains and is crowned Champion. Teams/players that lose in the Open Bracket will be placed in the Championship Losers Bracket, based on the same criteria as the 2010 Season.

More details on specifics regarding Pool Play, including how pools are determined and tiebreakers, can be found in the Pro Circuit Section.

StarCraft 2 and Halo: Reach will Use the Same Competition Format

Both games will feature Open Brackets, Pool Play, and a Championship Bracket. The only major difference between the two is that StarCraft 2 will feature a best-of-three series in all portions of the tournament, while Halo: Reach will feature a best-of-three Open Bracket and a best-of-five Championship Bracket.

Open Bracket Results Now Carry Over to Championship Bracket Matches

If two teams meet in the Championship Bracket after meeting in the Open Bracket, they will play an extended series, taking the previous best-of-three results into account. Here is a quick rundown of the extended series specifics:

Best of 3 + Best of 3 = Best of 7

Best of 3 + Best of 5 = Best of 9

Best of 5 + Best of 5 = Best of 11

The Removal of Placement Rounds

Because of the way Pool Play works, there will be no more Placement Rounds within the Championship Bracket.

Why These Changes Have Been Made

The new Competition Format in 2011 will result in a more exciting and fair competition for all MLG teams. It will also produce more matches over the course of the weekend for fans around the globe. For more information on MLG Dallas, including Schedules, Rules/Settings, and a full rundown of the Competition Format, be sure to check out the Pro Circuit Section.

Halo: Reach and StarCraft 2 Competition Passes will go on sale in the MLG Store Tuesday at 7pm ET. Don’t miss out!

11. Halo Reach and Black Ops Players who receive three Technical Fouls in one Match will be given a one minute Penalty.  After three Technical Fouls, each subsequent Technical Foul in the Match will result in another one minute penalty.  Players receiving a one minute penalty will be instructed by a Referee to put their controller on the ground at the start of their next Game.  After one minute has passed, the Referee will instruct the Player that they may pick up their controller.

Regular Season Events

1. Events will support as many as 272 Players, including 256 Players starting in the Open Bracket and 16 Players with Automatic Bracket Qualification into Championship Pool Play

2. Open and Championship Brackets will be separated into a Winners Bracket and a Losers Bracket. After losing a Match in a Winners Bracket, Players will enter a Losers Bracket. A Match loss in a Losers Bracket will result in elimination from the Event.

3. All Matches will be Best of 3 Games unless the Players have already played each other in the Event.

4. If Players are scheduled to play each other for the 2nd time in an Event, their match will expand to a Best of 7, include the previous Match, and pick up where that Match left off. For example, if Player A beat Player B 2 Gamers to 0 in Pool Play or a Winners Bracket the Best of 7 will resume with Game 3 and Player a Leading 2 Games to 0. when the Match is resumed the loser of the Pool Play/Winners Bracket Match must select the Map for the upcoming Gaming. The winner of the Finals Best of 7 will win the Event.

5.If the Players scheduled to play each other in the Finals have not yet played against
each other in the Event, an initial Match must be played.  If the Player who came from the
Championship Bracket Winners Bracket wins the initial Match, they will win the Event.  If
the Player who came from the Championship Bracket Losers Bracket wins the initial
Match, a tiebreaking Match must be played.  The winner of a tiebreaking Match will win
the Event.  Game 1 of an initial Match must be played on the Map that has been selected
for Game 1 of the Finals.  Game 1 of a tiebreaking Match must be played on the Map that
has been selected for Game 1 of the Winners Bracket Finals unless the Players have
already competed against each other on that Map, in which case the Player who came
from the Championship Bracket Winners Bracket will select the Map for Game 1 of the
tiebreaking Match.

6. Players eliminated by way of Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Rounds 1-8
will be scheduled to play one, two, or three Consolation Matches in order to determine their
exact 5th-32nd Ranking.  If the Players that win one and lose one Consolation Match
haven’t played a Consolation Match against each other, they will play each other in a
Consolation Match in order to break the tie.  These tiebreaking Consolation Matches only
apply to Players who lose in the same Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round.  A
Player’s Consolation Matches will be scheduled to begin immediately after they are
eliminated from the Event.

5. Each Pool’s 1st Place Player will advance into the Championship Bracket Winners Bracket Semifinals.  Each Pool’s 2nd Place Player will be placed into Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 6.  Each Pool’s 3rd Place Player will be placed into Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 5.  Each Pool’s 4th Place Player will be placed into Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 4.  Each Pool’s 5th Place Player will be placed into Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 3.  Players advancing from an Open Bracket with a Match loss in the last Open Bracket Winners Bracket Round will start in Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 2.  Players advancing from an Open Bracket with a Match loss in an earlier Open Bracket Winners Bracket Round will start in Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 1.

All Regular Season Competitions - Halo Reach Event

1.   Events will support as many as 208 Teams, including 192 Teams starting in the Open Bracket and 16 Teams with Automatic Bracket Qualification into Championship Pool Play.

2.   Open and Championship Brackets will be separated into a Winners Bracket and a Losers Bracket.  After losing a Match in a Winners Bracket, Teams will enter a Losers Bracket.  A Match loss in a Losers Bracket will result in elimination from the Event.

3.   All Open Bracket Matches will be Best of 3 Games unless the Teams have already played each other in the Open Bracket.  Best of 3 Game Matches will consist of two Team Slayer Games and one Capture the Flag Game.

4.   All Championship Pool Play Matches will be Best of 5 Games, consisting of two Team Slayer Games, two Capture the Flag Games, and one Assault Game.

5.   All Championship Bracket Matches will be Best of 5 Games unless the Teams have already played each other in the Event.  Best of 5 Game Matches will consist of two Team Slayer Games, two Capture the Flag Games, and one Assault Game.

6.   If Teams are scheduled to play each other for a 2nd time in an Open Bracket, their Match will expand to a Best of 7, include the previous Match, and pick up where that Match left off.  For example, if Team A beat Team B 2 Games to 0 in the Winners Bracket, the Best of 7 will resume with Game 3 and Team A leading 2 Games to 0.  If Game 3 of the Winners Bracket Match was not played, it must be played first and the Team that would’ve hosted the Game in the Winners Bracket will Host.  The Team that won the first Match must choose to Host or not Host Game 7.  The Host for Games 4-6 will be chosen in the opposite order in which Host was chosen for Games 1-3 (See All Regular Season Competitions - Halo Reach Event Rule #10).

7.   If Teams are scheduled to play each other in a Championship Bracket and they played each other in that Event’s Open Bracket, their Match will expand to a Best of 9, include the previous Match, and pick up where that Match left off.  For example, if Team A beat Team B 2 Games to 0 in the Open Bracket, the Best of 9 will resume with Game 3 and Team A leading 2 Games to 0.  If Game 3 of the Open Bracket Match was not played, it must be played first and the Team that would’ve hosted the Game in the Open Bracket will Host.  The Team that won the first Match must choose to Host or not Host Game 9.  Host for Games 4-8 will be chosen so that the Team that only hosted one of the first three Games will host three Games from 4-8 (See All Regular Season Competitions - Halo Reach Event Rule #11).  The winner of a Finals Best of 9 will win the Event.

8.   If Teams are scheduled to play each other for a 2nd time in an Event and their original Match was a Best of 5, their Match will expand to a Best of 11, include the previous Match, and pick up where that Match left off.  For example, if Team A beat Team B 3 Games to 0 in Championship Pool Play or in the Championship Bracket Winners Bracket, the Best of 11 will resume with Game 4 and Team A leading 3 Games to 0.  If Games 4 and/or 5 of the Pool Play/Winners Bracket Match were not played, they must be played first with Host for each Game going to the Team that would’ve hosted in Pool Play/Winners Bracket.  The Team that won the first Match must choose to Host or not Host Game 11.  The Host for Games 6-10 will be chosen in the opposite order in which Host was chosen for Games 1-5 (See All Regular Season Competitions - Halo Reach Event Rule #11).  The winner of a Finals Best of 11 will win the Event.

9.   If the Teams scheduled to play each other in the Finals have not yet played against each other in the Event, a Match must be played using the Finals Game Types.  If the Team that came from the Championship Bracket Winners Bracket wins the Match, they will win the Event.  If the Team that came from the Championship Bracket Losers Bracket wins the Match, a tiebreaking Match must be played using the Winners Bracket Finals Game Types.  The winner of a tiebreaking Match will win the Event.  Before the start of the Finals, the Team that came from the Championship Bracket Winners Bracket must choose the Match during which they will Host three Games and the Match during which they will Host two Games (See All Regular Season Competitions - Halo Reach Event Rule #11).

10. In a Best of 3 Game Match, the higher seeded Team must decide whether they want to Host one or two Games.  The Team set to Host one Game must choose the Game that they want to Host first.  The other Team must Host the other two Games.

11. In a Best of 5 Game Match, the higher seeded Team must decide whether they want to Host two or three Games.  The Team set to Host three Games must choose one Game that they want to Host first.  The other Team must then choose two Games that they want to Host.  The Team set to Host three Games must Host the Games that weren’t chosen.

12. Teams may request that they be allowed to give up their hosting privileges for one or more Games.  The opposing Team must then accept or reject the opportunity to Host that Game(s).

13. The Game Types for a Best of 7, Best of 9, or Best of 11 Game Match will be scheduled by the Halo Reach Tournament Director in order to ensure that a Game Type isn’t repeated.

14. Teams eliminated by way of Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Rounds 1-8 will be scheduled to play one, two, or three Consolation Matches in order to determine their exact 5th-32nd Ranking.  If the Teams that win one and lose one Consolation Match haven’t played a Consolation Match against each other, they will play each other in a Consolation Match in order to break the tie.  These tiebreaking Consolation Matches only apply to Teams that lose in the same Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round.  Consolation Matches will be scheduled to begin immediately after a Team is eliminated from the Event.

15. Teams must use Split Screen (2 Players per Monitor) in Open Bracket Winners Bracket Rounds 1-3 and Open Bracket Losers Bracket Rounds 1-3.  In all other Rounds, Teams will be allowed to use Split Screen or Full Screen (1 Player per Monitor).

Regular Season Bracket & Pool Play Details

1.   When 16 Teams remain in an Open Bracket (4 Winners Bracket Teams & 12 Losers Bracket Teams), the Open Bracket will end.  Each remaining Winners Bracket Team will advance into Championship Pool Play where they will be reseeded 17-20 and each remaining Losers Bracket Team will advance into the Championship Bracket Losers Bracket where they will be reseeded 21-32.

2.   In Championship Pool Play, the 16 Teams with Automatic Bracket Qualification and the 4 Teams advancing from the Open Bracket Winners Bracket will be divided into four Pools.  Pool A will consist of the Teams seeded 1, 8, 9, 16, and 17.  Pool B will consist of the Teams seeded 2, 7, 10, 15, and 18.  Pool C will consist of the Teams seeded 3, 6, 11, 14, and 19.  Pool D will consist of the Teams seeded 4, 5, 12, 13, and 20.

3.   Teams will play one Match against each of the other Teams in their Pool.

4.   Pool Play Ranking (1st-5th) will be determined using each Team’s Record of Matches won and lost.  Ties will be broken using the following Tiebreakers in this order: Head to Head (Match Winning Percentage using only Matches between the tied Teams), Games Won Percentage (All Pool Play Matches), Pool Play Points (Team Slayer Points + (4*(Capture the Flag Points + Assault Points))), and Seed.  If there is a tie involving more than two Teams and one of the Tiebreakers resolves the tie for a Team(s), but leaves at least two Teams tied, resolution of the tie(s) that still exists will start over with Tiebreaker #1.  If Head to Head, Games Won Percentage, or Pool Play Points is used to break a tie, the higher number will win the Tiebreaker.  If Seed is used to break a tie, the lower number will win the Tiebreaker.

5.   Each Pool’s 1st Place Team will advance into the Championship Bracket Winners Bracket Semifinals.  Each Pool’s 2nd Place Team will be placed into Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 6.  Each Pool’s 3rd Place Team will be placed into Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 5.  Each Pool’s 4th Place Team will be placed into Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 4.  Each Pool’s 5th Place Team will be placed into Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 3.  Teams advancing from an Open Bracket with a Match loss in the last Open Bracket Winners Bracket Round will start in Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 2.  Teams advancing from an Open Bracket with a Match loss in an earlier Open Bracket Winners Bracket Round will start in Championship Bracket Losers Bracket Round 1.

National Championship Bracket Details

The 2011 Halo Reach National Championship Event will be open to all Teams.

National Championship Bracket Details = TBA

Rank Points, Seeding & Pro Status

1.   The top 48 Teams in each Event will receive Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points.

2.   Registered Teams will be seeded for each Event using the following criteria in this order: Halo Reach Pro Status Rankings, Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points*, Halo Reach LAN Center Rank Points**, and Halo Reach Online Qualifier Rank Points.  Ties will be broken using the next available criterion or randomly if necessary.  Teams with no Halo Reach Rank Points will be seeded randomly.  Teams will be seeded 1-192 for all Open Brackets.  Teams will be seeded 1-32 for all Championship Pool Play/Championship Brackets.

*2010 Halo Reach Dallas Rank Points will be used as the highest priority Rank Points in seeding the Halo Reach Event at the 2011 Dallas Competition.  After the Dallas Competition, 2011 Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points will replace all the 2010 Halo Reach Dallas Rank Points.  2011 Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points may be used as Rolling Rank Points in 2012.

**LAN Center Rank Points may or may not be implemented in 2011.

3.   In Championship Pool Play and Championship Brackets, Teams with Automatic Bracket Qualification will be seeded ahead of Teams advancing from the Open Bracket.

4.   Championship Pool Play Teams will keep their Seed in the Championship Bracket.

5.   Teams advancing from an Open Bracket will be reseeded for Championship Pool Play or a Championship Bracket using their Open Bracket Seed.

6.   Championship Bracket Teams advancing from the Open Bracket without a Match loss will be reseeded ahead of Championship Bracket Teams advancing from the Open Bracket with a Match loss.

7.   Championship Bracket Teams advancing from the Open Bracket with a Match loss in the last Winners Bracket Round will be reseeded ahead of Teams advancing from the Open Bracket with a Match loss in an earlier Open Bracket Winners Bracket Round.

8.   The top 16 Teams, determined by Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points immediately following each Pro Circuit Competition will earn Pro Status.  Ties will be broken by each Team’s Ranking in the most recent Event.  As long as Pro Teams maintain at least two Players from the previous Halo Reach Pro Circuit Event’s Roster and their Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rolling Rank Points total remains equal to or above the Minimum Rank Point total, they will maintain their Pro Status Ranking, even if Roster changes result in a change in the Team’s Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points total.  If a Team disbands, all lower ranked Pro Teams will move up one spot in the Pro Status Rankings.  However, this won’t result in an Amateur Team earning Pro Status.  Players who are members of Pro Teams, but have fewer than 250 Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points will not be awarded Pro Status.

Regular Season Automatic Bracket Qualification

1.   At 5 PM ET on the Thursday just over four weeks prior to the start of an Event, the top 16 seeded/eligible Teams will receive Automatic Bracket Qualification for the Event’s Championship Pool Play.

2.   In order to be eligible for Automatic Bracket Qualification, Pro Teams that plan to participate in the upcoming Halo Reach Event must notify MLG (emailjnelson@mlgpro.com) by 5 PM ET on the Thursday just over four weeks prior to the start of the Event.

3.   In order to be eligible for Automatic Bracket Qualification, Amateur Teams must take advantage of their Free or Reserved Team Pass (See Registration #4) or purchase a Team Pass, submit their Team Roster to MLG (email jnelson@mlgpro.com), and complete their Team in Team Builder (Four Confirmed Players) by the same 5 PM ET Thursday deadline.  Eligible Amateur Teams will receive Automatic Bracket Qualification or be ranked in a queue based on Rank Points, Seeding & Pro Status Rule #2.

4.   Queued Teams are permitted to make Roster changes up until the Team Builder Lock (See 2011 Pro Circuit Registration Rules).  However, such Teams must maintain at least 2 Players from their submitted Team Roster in order to stay in the queue.  Also, Teams must maintain at least 75% of their submitted Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points total in order to keep their ranking in the queue.  Teams that don’t maintain at least 75% of their submitted Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points total will be re-ranked in the queue according to their new Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points total.  2010 Halo Reach Dallas Rank Points will be used instead of Halo Reach Pro Circuit Rank Points for 2011 Dallas Queued Teams.

5.   If a Halo Reach Team with Automatic Bracket Qualification chooses not to participate in the upcoming Event and notifies MLG prior to the start of the Event, the #1 queued Team will be selected to take their place (Replacement Team).  If there are no Teams in the queue, the #1 seeded Team without Automatic Bracket Qualification, that is complete in Team Builder at the Team Builder Lock, will be selected as a Replacement Team.

6.   A Replacement Team will not be selected when a Team with Automatic Bracket Qualification fails to notify MLG of their non-participation prior to the start of the Event.

7.   Replacement Teams will be given the #16 Seed.  As a result, other Teams with Automatic Bracket Qualification may see their Seed improve.  However, all Teams will keep their position in Championship Pool Play or the Championship Bracket.  Replacement Teams will take the exact position within Championship Pool Play or the Championship Bracket of the Team that they have replaced.

8.   Amateur Teams with Automatic Bracket Qualification are locked.  When Amateur Teams are locked, Players can’t be removed until Check-In, if they are deemed to be unable to attend at that time or if they don’t want to participate in the Event.  Also, Players must submit requests to MLG (email jnelson@mlgpro.com) in order to leave their Team and if a Player leaves a locked Amateur Team, they won’t be allowed to play in the Event.

9.   Amateur Teams with Automatic Bracket Qualification at the last Regular Season Competition will also be locked for the National Championship Competition unless they fail to earn Pro Status immediately following the last Regular Season Competition.

10. If an Amateur Team with Automatic Bracket Qualification is, at any time before the start of the upcoming Halo Reach Pro Circuit Event, left with fewer than two Players from the submitted Team Roster, the Team will be unlocked, stripped of Automatic Bracket Qualification, and a Replacement Team will be selected (See Automatic Bracket Qualification Rule #5).

Registration

1.   All Players on Teams that finish in the top 16 of an Event will receive Free Entry into the Halo Reach Event at the next Pro Circuit Competition.

2.   All Teams that finish 17th-32nd in an Event will be given a Reserved Team Pass for the Halo Reach Event at the next Pro Circuit Competition.

3.   Team Pass Reservations will be held by the Captain of the Halo Reach Team that earned the Reserved Team Pass.
