The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788, 24/7 and confidential (thehotline.org). To report a child being groomed or exploited online, contact the NCMEC CyberTipline at 1-800-843-5678 or CyberTipline.org. For a mental-health crisis, call or text 988; call 911 for immediate danger.
The warmth and the warning arrive together.
The early warmth and the early warning signs often show up at the exact same time. Here's how to tell them apart. A lot of the relationships people meet through gaming and online communities move fast, and fast can feel flattering. Some of the same behaviors that feel like intensity early on are the same patterns that show up later once a relationship turns controlling - just wearing a nicer outfit.
If you are in immediate danger, stop reading and call your local emergency number now - 911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK and Ireland, 000 in Australia, 111 in New Zealand, or 112 across most of Europe.
Early flags worth pausing on
- Moving impossibly fast - declarations of love, future-planning, or wanting exclusivity within days, before there's been time to actually know each other.
- Jealousy framed as love - getting upset about your other friendships or your time "before I met them," dressed up as how much they care.
- Pushing past a boundary once and testing whether you push back - a small overstep, watched closely, then repeated or escalated if it goes unchallenged.
- Isolating you gently - subtle digs at your friends or family, or making plans that always seem to compete with your other relationships.
- Extreme highs and lows - intense affection followed by sudden coldness or anger, keeping you constantly trying to get back to the good version.
A useful rule of thumb
Healthy interest can wait. A person who's genuinely good for you does not need everything - your time, your trust, your other friendships - handed over immediately. Speed is not the same as depth, even though it can feel identical in the moment.
If something already feels off
Trust the discomfort even before you can fully explain it - that feeling usually arrives before the reasoning does. Talk to a friend who's not inside the relationship; an outside view catches what's hard to see from the inside. In the U.S., loveisrespect.org is built specifically for this stage, alongside the general hotlines in the note above.

The questions people actually ask
What are the earliest red flags in a relationship?
Intensity too fast, pressure disguised as passion, contempt for their exes as a group, testing small boundaries to see whether you hold them, and irritation whenever you spend time with anyone else.
Is moving fast always a bad sign?
Not always, but speed is the most common tool for skipping the stage where you would normally notice things. Real affection survives slowing down. Something that needs urgency to work is telling you what it is.
They speak badly about every ex. Does that matter?
It is one of the more reliable early signals. Everyone has one bad breakup. A pattern where every former partner was crazy usually means you are being told in advance how you will be described.
What is a boundary test?
A small request or joke that crosses a line slightly, watching whether you push back, and then going further if you do not. It is not clumsiness. It is calibration.
What if I am already in it and seeing these?
Noticing is not overreacting, and leaving early costs far less than leaving later. If some of this is already familiar, the guides on abuse and trauma bonding go further into why it gets harder to leave over time.
If this one found you
Recognizing Domestic Abuse
Abuse is rarely just hitting. It is usually control first, and control is quieter and harder to name.
Trauma Bonding and Stockholm Syndrome
Still caring about someone who hurt you is not proof you are weak. It is how the brain is wired to survive.
Am I the One Being Controlling?
Not everyone reading this is on the receiving end. Some of us are repeating a pattern without meaning to.
You do not have to be certain to deserve help
Hotline advocates spend most of their time talking with people still working out whether their situation counts. You are allowed to call to think out loud.
